Channel geometries are fundamental to analyses of riverine hydrology and geomorphology due to channel shape controlling flow hydraulics and sediment transport capacities. A common approach for collecting bathymetric data is through surveying with an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) and survey-grade global navigation satellite system (GNSS) equipment. An ADCP uses sonar and calculated doppler equations to render transects of the bathymetry and discharge. While collecting ADCP data can be relatively straight-forward, this form of surveying can provide an excellent opportunity for undergraduate students to participate in research through a High-Impact Learning Experience (HILE), an alternative to traditional education methods. Research on the impact of riverine hydrology and floodplains, presented seven undergraduate students with the opportunity to join a HILE research class.
